Inclusions are common and natural in moonstone, including the characteristic “centipede” inclusions — fine needle-like intersecting lines that are a natural feature of the stone’s crystal structure and are considered acceptable, and even desirable, by knowledgeable collectors.
Physical Properties
Rainbow Moonstone has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, making it moderately durable but requiring reasonable care in everyday wear. It has two directions of cleavage, which means it can be prone to splitting if struck with a sharp blow. For this reason, protective settings are recommended, particularly for rings and bracelets. Pendants and earrings are ideal applications for this stone, allowing it to move freely and display its adularescence to full effect.
The stone is most commonly cut as a cabochon, a smooth, domed cut with no facets, which is the ideal form for showcasing adularescence. The dome of the cabochon acts as a lens, concentrating and intensifying the play of light within the stone. Faceted Rainbow Moonstone is less common but increasingly popular among contemporary jewelry designers who appreciate the way faceting adds an additional layer of light interaction to an already luminous gem.
